The 2021 BMW X5 towing capacity reaches up to 7,200 pounds with any traditional turbocharged gasoline engine, or up to 5,952 pounds with the new plug-in hybrid configuration. With any powertrain, you’ll need to add the optional BMW X5 tow hitch ($550) in order to reach the maximum capacity.

Of course, you can rest assured that no matter what configuration you choose, you’ll receive next-generation safety and performance features that make it easy to tow with confidence! Find out exactly what this model can do by reading on.

BMW X5 Towing and Performance Specs

No matter which BMW X5 powertrain you select, this model comes complete with plenty of power and a reliable 8-speed automatic transmission. That’s another way of saying that you’ll have no trouble getting up to speed, even when you’re pulling a heavy trailer.

While towing capacity remains more or less constant across the gas-powered lineup, other performance specs will vary from trim to trim. Here’s what you should keep in mind when you’re selecting or configuring your model:

The BMW X5 towing capacity is certainly impressive, but it’s not the only area where this model excels. Get up close and personal with the X5 interior to learn more, or compare the BMW X5 to the Acura MDX.

BMW X5 Tow Package

The BMW X5 tow package includes a Class III trailer hitch, and it’s available on every model in the lineup for the same $550 price tag. Although this hitch is simple enough to operate, it’s important to familiarize yourself with all of the BMW X5 towing information in your owner’s manual before you try to hook up a trailer.

Opting for the BMW X5 tow hitch requires you to remove the optional Comfort Access feature, which lets you open your tailgate by running a foot beneath the bumper. We think it’s a fair trade for most adventurous drivers, but it’s definitely a limitation that you’ll want to keep in mind!

BMW X5 Towing Features

If you plan on doing a lot of heavy lifting, it’s a good idea to upgrade your X5 with xDrive all-wheel drive. With that said, even if you decide to forgo upgrades entirely, you’ll still enjoy the extra protection provided by each of the following standard features:

  • Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) with Brake Fade Compensation, Start-off Assistant, Brake Drying, and Brake Stand-by features
  • Dynamic Traction Control (DTC)
  • Dynamic Brake Control (DBC)
  • Hill Descent Control (HDC)
  • Dynamic Damper Control
  • 4-wheel ventilated disc brakes
  • Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)
  • Icon Adaptive Full LED Headlights
  • LED fog lights and Automatic High Beams
  • Programmable LED Daytime Running Lights
  • Active Driving Assistant with Frontal Collision Warning, Active Blind Spot Detection, and a Lane Departure Warning

If you’re looking for options that will make it even easier to tow, here’s what you should consider:

  • The Parking Assistance Package ($800) adds Surround View w/ 3D View, a feature that makes it much easier to hook up a trailer or navigate crowded lots and campsites. You’ll also receive automatic Parking Assistant Plus, which will come in handy elsewhere.
  • Two-Axle Air Suspension ($1,000) won’t just provide you with a more comfortable ride on the highways near Chula Vista and El Cajon. Since you can raise or lower the vehicle at will, it’s much easier to line up and connect your trailer hitch.
  • The Dynamic Handling Package ($2,600) is offered on the M40i. When equipped, you’ll enjoy superior control due to Adaptive M Suspension Professional, Active Roll Stabilization, and Integral Active Steering.
