What to Expect from the 2021 BMW 5 Series Redesign

Although there isn’t an all-new BMW 5 Series for 2021, you’d be forgiven for suspecting otherwise. After all, the 2021 BMW 5 Series has received a significant update for the new model year, with a new grille, a new plug-in hybrid powertrain, and updates to safety and infotainment features all numbering among the changes. 2021 BMW 5 Series Changes: Exterior

The BMW 5 Series is still in its seventh generation, but this year’s model has been updated with a new design that’s more in line with the rest of the BMW lineup. Here’s what you should know:

• BMW Kidney Grille: Have you noticed the new BMW Kidney Grille on the X7 and the 7 Series? The 5 Series is getting the same treatment; for 2021, the grill will be taller and wider. It will also feature sharp, straight, repeating lines.
• Total Body Length: The 5 Series is now a little bit longer from end to end. 1.2 inches longer, to be exact.
• Headlights: Adaptive LED Headlights are still standard, but they’ve been slimmed down and reshaped. They’re flanked by L-shaped daytime running lights which also function as turn signals.
• Tailpipes: All 5 Series models now feature trapezoidal tailpipes which are integrated into the bottom of the rear bumper.

2021 BMW 5 Series Changes: Interior

• Digital Displays: A 12.3-inch digital instrument display and a 12.3-inch digital central touchscreen control display both come standard now. These are larger than the previous model’s standard offerings.
• Upholstery: Perforated SenseTec® upholstery with contrast stitching is now standard on all four and six-cylinder models. All models can be upgraded with Nappa leather or Dakota leather– with the exception of the M550i, which features Dakota leather as standard.

2021 BMW 5 Series Changes: Performance

• New Mild-Hybrid Tech: The 2021 BMW 5 Series 540i features a new 48V starter-generator. Paired with this model’s six-cylinder engine, it delivers faster acceleration and improves the utility of your Brake Energy Regeneration.
• Plug-In Hybrid Improvements: If you’ve been considering the 530e or the 530e xDrive, now might be the perfect time to jump in. Improvements to the technology has generated a significant boost in power: up from 248 to 288 hp for model-year 2021. With XtraBoost, you’ll go from 0 to 60 in 5.7 seconds on the highways near Chula Vista.
